Plant to Protect engages children and school communities in planting and caring for carefully selected mosquito-repellent trees.
The programme combines malaria education, environmental learning and practical student participation. It helps schools establish greener surroundings while teaching children about mosquitoes, malaria prevention and responsible care for the environment.
Tree species are selected with guidance from qualified environmental and public health specialists. Selection considers child safety, local climate, ecological impact, school space, maintenance needs and available scientific evidence.
Plant to Protect aims to:
✅ Plant suitable mosquito-repellent trees in participating schools.
✅ Teach children about malaria, mosquitoes and environmental health.
✅ Develop children’s interest in conservation and practical science.
✅ Encourage schools to maintain clean and healthy surroundings.
✅ Promote the safe removal of unnecessary standing water.
✅ Strengthen cooperation among students, teachers, parents and community leaders.
✅ Increase awareness of proven malaria-prevention methods.
Participating schools may take part in:
✅ Environmental assessment of school grounds
✅ Selection of safe and locally appropriate tree species
✅ Establishment of school tree nurseries where practical
✅ Supervised school tree-planting days
✅ Student environment clubs and tree-care teams
✅ Labelling trees with their local, common and scientific names
✅ Lessons about malaria, mosquitoes and environmental health
✅ Identification and removal of mosquito-breeding sites
✅ Monitoring tree survival, growth and maintenance
✅ Recognition of schools caring successfully for their trees
A student or student group may be assigned a tree to care for under adult supervision.
Children can record:
✅ The name of the tree
✅ The planting date
✅ Its growth and condition
✅ Watering and maintenance activities
✅ Lessons learned from caring for it
This encourages responsibility, teamwork and continued environmental learning.
Children may plant, water and monitor trees under adult supervision. They should not burn leaves, consume plant materials, prepare plant extracts or apply homemade products to their skin.
Mosquito-repellent trees are a complementary environmental and educational initiative. They do not replace insecticide-treated mosquito nets, approved indoor residual spraying, malaria testing or appropriate treatment.
Mosquito-repellent trees support environmental learning, but every child still needs proven protection from malaria.
